  1. The Sony Entertainment Robot AIBO won a special Intelligent Design award in the 2000 German Red Dot awards. Members of the jury were having lunch when Jury Chairman Peter Zec brought the AIBO in and set it in motion. Thr jury members including Uwe Bahnsen, Mario Bellini, Roy Fleetwood, Glen Oliver Low and myself reacted like little boys, all down onthe floor playing with the robot. Aibo has a complex body language, based on the clever interplay between software and hardware with 18 degrees of freedom. Aibo barks, wags his tail, fetches balls and generally reacts to people the way a real dog does. AIBO in Japanese means friend. It also made the cover of the Design Innovations Yearbook and is recognized as the founder of a new genre of entertainment robots.
